Waterborne
Artisans on Taylor presents the show, "Waterborne” for the month of September. This dynamic show features the works of painter Karen Hackenberg, painter and mountain climber Renan Ozturk, painter Mak Knutson, and jeweler Elyse Garling. All the artists in this exhibition are working within the theme of fully taking in their surroundings and allowing this to inspire the work that flows from them.
Karen Hackenberg, a Port Townsend resident, and celebrated regional artist has been gaining momentum and recognition since the late 90s. Her ability to take the images and landscape around her, and depict them with profound clarity is truly stunning. A deep connection to nature and her awareness of the relationship of human beings to their outside world, has driven Hackenberg to look carefully at what humans discard and then, to create works of her findings. As Hackenberg scours the beaches in our area, she searches for what most people would ignore. She might see a coffee cup, a child’s toy, or water bottles, and in this waste, she creates beautiful images that beg us to take another look at how we are treating our earth.
Also on exhibition for the month of September will be two works by mountain climber, filmmaker, and painter Renan Ozturk. Ozturks film, “The Towers of Enniddi”, will be screened during the Port Townsend Film Festival. Ozturk, who resides in Colorado, is internationally known for his rock-climbing abilities which he has been practicing for the last 10 years, as well as his films, his artwork, done on location during climbs, and hangs in collections such as North Face, and in galleries throughout the country. Jeweler Elyse Garling is one of Port Townsend’s sweethearts. Garling grew up in the area and now resides in New York. She will be bringing an array of jewels that have a balance of industrial edges and sublime beauty to the September 3rd gallery walk. Painter Mak Knutson, a local painter, returning to his roots after years away, will begin his Port Townsend debut during the month of September. Knutson’s paintings have hung throughout the country over the last decade, and his show will continue through the Undertown with an opening on September 17.
The September show will also be the grand opening of the new location of Artisans on Taylor, now located at 911 Water St. A reception for the artists will be held during gallery walk, September 3rd from 6-8pm.
